The UVU College of Humanities and Social Sciences, in conjunction with its sponsors and supporters, is pleased to announce the 2023 UVU Conference on Addiction. The single day conference is planned for Friday, March 3rd, 2023 in the Sorensen Student Center on UVU campus. The conference will be held this year as a ‘hybrid’ event. This means that participants and presenters can choose to join us in person face-to-face or via our virtual portal (on-line).
Although the full program is still being developed, the conference will feature a keynote address by actor and advocate Tom Arnold. As one of Hollywood’s most entertaining funnymen, you would think Tom Arnold has a lot to laugh about. But life has never been easy for this comedian, producer and actor. He has struggled with addiction and multiple health scares for decades. Sober for nearly 20 years, Tom relapsed after a motorcycle wreck led to an addiction to painkillers in 2007. He relapsed again several years ago and sought treatment once again. This summer, he celebrated five years of sobriety and the loss of 75 pounds after a mini-stroke. Now sharing his incredible journey with others, Tom imparts a powerful message of hope to those who have been affected by addiction. Walking proof that it is possible to recover and dramatically improve your life, health and relationships, Tom discusses his path to recovery and how there is always hope—no matter what stage of addiction you’re in.
In addition, we will feature a plenary speaker as well as a broad selection of concurrent break-out sessions on varied topics of interest to the addiction community. Participants will enjoy multiple sessions meeting the interests/needs of those seeking professional information on substance abuse disorders as well as compulsive behavioral addictions, educational perspectives regarding prevention and treatment, and information for families and loved ones experiencing the challenges of addiction. The concurrent session program is expected to include presentations intended to help participants investigate various aspects of addiction while meeting the interests/needs of students, professionals, families, business leaders and service providers alike.
