NOTE: Alternative Breaks are university opportunities to study a social issue and work towards addressing it in community with other students, educators, and community members. To participate in Alternative Breaks students will have to pay a specific amount that is dependent on the type of trip, but there are scholarships available for students who come from underserved backgrounds as well as for those who are first generation and working-class. Below is a description of this specific alternative break.

Alternative Fall Break - Gentrification & Housing Insecurity - Salt Lake City, UT

Salt Lake City has faced one of the nations highest inflation periods in urban housing while also becoming a hub for unsheltered communities. In this Alternative Break, we dive into gentrification in our home state to uncover the impact of large developers and their impact on working-class communities. We will be working with local activists like the Rose Park Brown Berets and a local urban development firm to better understand gentrification. We also focus on the efforts of local activists and non-profits that are assisting unsheltered communities in SLC. We will stay the weekend in SLC and take part in a variety of service opportunities while studying the systems in place that cause harm and redesign potential interventions through policy, activism, research and more.
